News over the death of Rajib Das has captured immense media interest since his death on Feb 14 2011, when he tried protecting his 20 year old sister from eve teasers in Barasat, Kolkota. While one of the culprits was nabbed, the other 2 are still on the run. The State Govt announced a compensation of Rs. 2,00,000/- to the family and also offered a job to the mother of the deceased in the Panchayat Office. This incident raised a public outcry and the media was at close heels updating the public on the latest.
Something that caught my eye was a simple closing line in a recent article - an armed Sentry who was guarding a government official’s bungalow close to the crime scene was suspended for not offering help when Rajib’s sister sought help.
‘Work to Rule’ is a tool used by workers in protest. Here is a armed government sentry, who refused to go beyond his boundry of his work profile to help out a hapless citizen. This ’suspension’ was a punishment that reinforced the importance of having social commitment and respect to humanity. I hope this leads to a more severe punishment soon.
